Nalanda University, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Bihar, is among the oldest universities globally, dating back to the 3rd century. Originally known as Nalanda Mahavira, it was a renowned Buddhist monastery. Located 85 km from Patna, it’s mentioned in ancient Indian epics and Hiuen Tsang’s travels. Built by Gupta kings in the Kusan style, it was supported by Emperor Ashoka and Emperor Harshavandhana. Former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam proposed reviving the university in March 2016.
