Joshimath, also called Jyotirmath, is a hill town in Uttarakhand, perched at an altitude of 6150 feet in Chamoli district. It’s an important place for Hindu pilgrims because it’s near one of the four ‘maths’ established by Adi Guru Shri Shankaracharya in the 8th century. This ‘math’ is dedicated to the holy text of Hindus called Atharva Veda.
Joshimath overlooks the meeting point of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers at Vishnu Prayag. It’s also where the idol of Lord Badri is moved during winters from Badrinath.
