Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are ancient caves on Elephanta Island, about 11 km from Mumbai. Also called Gharapuri Island, these caves were made in medieval India by cutting rocks. They used to have beautiful paintings, but now they are in ruins. You can take a ferry from Gateway of India to reach there and enjoy a nice view of Mumbai. These caves were built between the 5th and 7th centuries and are mostly temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
